This was Chonan's 4th fight in the UFC.
When I arrived in Montreal, I saw a new Chonan. He was more focused, in better condition, and dropping the weight was going easier than it had in the past.
Fight Day:
In the first round, Chonan took the fight to the ground with a nice throw. T.J. had a very active guard and was constantly going for submissions but, Chonan was able to keep top position and land punishing blows for the majority of round until the last minute mark.
T.J. scrambled to his feet and took Chonan down. Chonan worked his way back to his feet before the rounded ended with both of them landing strikes.
In my mind, I thought the judges would have scored it 10-9 Chonan or maybe had it even at 10-10.
In round 2, after eating a few punches, Chonan is able to score a single leg takedown. Unfortunately, T.J. is able to stand back up and get a takedown of his own. T.J. then is able to take Chonan's back.
Chonan escaped and secured side position. He then started to land punches and elbows until T.J. gets a reverse and regained top position when Chonan failed to secure a leg lock...
After fighting back and regaining control, Chonan closes the round by sprawling out and attempting to finish T.J. with a choke.
This round was back and forth. I think it could have gone either way.
During the 3rd round, Chonan was controlling the pace by landing strikes from inside T.J.'s guard... until the last minute.
T.J. flurried and tried to leave a lasting impression in the judges mind. I scored this round 10-9 because Chonan controlled the first 4 minutes of the round.
When it went to the decision, 2 out of 3 judges scored in favor of T.J....wtf!?!?
What can I say, when you fight in someones backyard, I guess the only way to when is by KO. Unfortunately, Chonan was not able to do that...
Both fighters fought their hearts out. At the end of the day, fans couldn't have asked for more.
Here are a few misc pics of Chonan backstage before the fight.
